Prophetic Poetry: Dear Adam + Eve, What Was it Like?
Adam and Eve, scholars believe, went through a period in their lives that was characterized by a deep depression.
They had walked with God in the Garden of Eden, knew Him intimately, and tasted a life of perfection. They lived without sin, without evil, and with no decay nor destruction. With deception and their choice of betrayal and self over God, they were cast away from the presence of God with a chasm too far to cross on their own.
Can you imagine the stark contrast between the life in which God created for them and the life marred by sin in which they chose? It was nearly 930 years of that life away from God.
Yet still, I believe that Adam and Eve had such a supernatural experience of God, that they knew His promise was true. Father God, in the midst of Adam and Eve’s betrayal and falling into the serpent’s deception, proclaimed— for the FIRST TIME— the εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion // the Gospel // the Good News // Redemption).
Genesis 3:15 says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” This is known as the protoevangelium—the first Gospel.
I believe that Adam and Eve must have heard God’s Word— from God Himself— and that, by faith, they believed in the promised offspring— their Savior to come— to redeem.
FAITH LIKE ENOCH
I think about what Adam must have told his children and their children. What kind of questions would they ask him? What sort of conversations did Adam have with his descendants?
There was a descendant of Adam named Enoch, whom I can only imagine asked this question: “What was it like? What is God like?” Adam, emerging from depression and catching the passion within his child, taught Enoch the truth, he shared about what it was like, and Enoch began— humanity again, walking with God. He began to know what God was like, because He knew God. Enoch knew God so much so that it pleased God that Enoch would never taste death, God evaded the curse of death to bring Enoch into His presence yet again. That is the kind of relationship I want with the Lord— to know Him and to please Him like Enoch did.
Genesis 5:24
“And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”
Hebrews 11:5-6
By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
I believe Enoch’s relationship with God stemmed by asking Adam and Eve what it was like to be in His presence… and when he heard what it was like, when he heard Who God is, He yearned for Him, He searched for Him, and He found Him. He found Redemption.
Dear adam and eve, what was it like?
A Poem By Rachel Lynn Lawrence
Dear Adam and Eve,
What was it like
To be cast away from beauty
To lose the privilege of only experiencing everlasting
To dwell in increasing darkness
To feel turmoil in your soul?
What was it like
To name states that should
Never
Have
Existed?
To name:
Depression
Anxiety
Lack
Loneliness
Poverty
Stupor
Strife
Envy
Bitterness
Despair
Doubt
SIN?
What was it like
To feel the unimaginable
To lose the One who loves
To choose the lesser portion
To feel the sting of a lie
To betray
…and then…
To regret?
What was it like
To reminisce in
What
Was—
Remembering:
Indulging in His goodness
Seeing the face of His
Walking alongside the One
Experiencing no lack
Working diligently with and for
Being embraced and nurtured
Gazing upon Love
What was it like
To know intimately the One who
Always and
Will forever
Exist—
To know:
The Great I Am
The Way
The Truth
The Life
The Prince of Peace
The Father
The Creator
The Shepherd
The Almighty One
The Lord of Lords
YAHWEH
What was is like
To realize
What will yet come to be—
As you cling to the promise of:
Grace
Forgiveness
Love
Restoration
New Life
Hope
Future
Freedom
Your Savior–
—Who always is and
—Who always will be
What was it like
To return to your source
To again gaze upon His face
To be embraced in intimacy
To never run again
To indulge in His goodness
To worship and love
To be redeemed and reconciled—
—-Forevermore—
Thank you, Jesus,
that we can know what redemption is like!
